How baccarat works
Two hands are dealt in every round: the Player hand and the Banker hand. The names are just labels – you are not the player and the casino is not the banker. You simply bet on which hand will finish closer to 9, or on a Tie. Once bets are closed, the dealer follows fixed drawing rules, so there are no decisions to make after you place your chips.
Live baccarat is usually dealt from a shoe of eight standard decks. Because the rules are automatic, rounds are quick – often well under a minute – which is part of the game’s appeal and also a reason to pace yourself.

When a hand totals 10 or more, only the last digit counts. A 7 and an 8 make 15, which counts as 5. A King and a 9 make 9, the best possible total. You can never go “bust” in baccarat.
Naturals and the third-card rule
Each hand starts with two cards. If either hand totals 8 or 9 – a natural – both hands stand and the round is settled immediately. Otherwise, the Player hand acts first:
- Player total 0–5: the Player draws a third card.
- Player total 6–7: the Player stands.
- If the Player stands, the Banker draws on 0–5 and stands on 6–7.
If the Player draws a third card, the Banker’s action depends on its own total and on the value of the Player’s third card:

You never need to memorise this table to play – the dealer and the software apply it automatically. Knowing it simply helps you follow the action and understand why Banker wins slightly more often than Player.
Bets, payouts and house edge
Because the Banker hand acts last, it wins a little more often. To balance that, Banker wins normally pay 0.95 to 1 – the 5% commission. Even after commission, Banker remains the lowest-edge bet on the table.

When a round ends in a Tie, Player and Banker bets are usually returned (a push). Check the rules panel of each table, because side-bet payouts can vary between studios.

Baccarat roadmaps explained
Live baccarat tables display scoreboards called roadmaps. They record past results in different ways:

Roadmaps are fun to follow and part of baccarat culture, but they record history only. Every hand comes from a shuffled shoe and is independent of the last one, so a long Banker streak does not make Player “due”.
Strategies: what helps and what does not
What genuinely helps
- Favour the Banker bet – it has the lowest house edge in the game.
- Skip the Tie and pair bets unless you accept a much higher cost for entertainment.
- Use flat stakes – the same amount every hand.
- Set a session budget and a time limit before you sit down.
- Stop after a planned win target instead of playing it back.
What does not help: the Martingale
The Martingale system doubles your bet after every loss, hoping one win recovers everything. The table shows why it fails in practice: losing streaks come around more often than people expect, and table limits and bankrolls run out quickly.

Seven losses in a row risk RM1,270 to win back a single RM10 unit. Positive systems such as Paroli are less dangerous, but no betting pattern changes the house edge.

Is Banker the best bet in baccarat?
Mathematically, yes. Even after the 5% commission, the Banker bet has a house edge of about 1.06%, slightly lower than the Player bet at 1.24%.
Why is there a 5% commission on Banker wins?
The Banker hand acts last under the third-card rule, so it wins slightly more often than Player. The commission balances that advantage.
What does the Tie bet pay?
The Tie usually pays 8 to 1. It looks attractive, but its house edge of about 14.36% makes it one of the most expensive bets in the casino.
Can you count cards in baccarat?
